The atoms and molecules in gases are much more spread out than in solids or liquids. They vibrate and move freely at high speeds. A gas will fill any container, but if the container is not sealed, the gas will escape. Gas can be compressed much more easily than a liquid or solid.

The size of an atom can be measured by its atomic radius. Atomic radius is the distance between the center of the nucleus of an atom to the valence shell or the last shell. Ideally, the greater the number of the shells, the greater the atomic radius. If both have the same number of shells, then the number of protons and electrons will be the basis in determining the atomic radius. Protons located in the nucleus and electrons stays in the shells. Protons is positive charged and will attract the electrons carrying negative charge which affects the size of atomic radius making the valence shell to come closed to the nucleus occupying less atomic radius. More protons will results to lesser atomic radius. If they have the same number of protons then the lesser number of electrons have smaller atomic radius since it has more attraction compared to more number of electrons.
Chlorine atom have smaller atomic size compared to Chlorine ion.
